New Windows 10 Lockscreen

With Microsoft’s new update to the Windows 10 Technical Preview, a lot of features that people were expecting have started arriving. Some however are hidden from most users but can be easily enabled by editing the registry.

This tutorial will show you how to enable a new lockscreen & login screen that show the path that Microsoft are taking with their UI. One of the major things you’ll notice is the introduction of circle based profile pictures which is visible with this change. However, doing so is at your own risk as these are features Microsoft aren’t enabling possibly due to bugs. If you’re not familiar with changing values in your registry, you might want to wait until an official release.

Threshold

Modify the registry to enable new hidden features

You can enable this feature with the following steps:

  1. Press Win+R and type in ‘regedit’ then hit enter.
  2. Go to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\TestHooks’
  3. Double click on the ‘Threshold’ option and set the value to 1

You’ll now be able to take advantage of a feature Microsoft are most likely going to release in a future update to the Technical Preview.

If you’re unhappy with the lockscreen, it’s as easy as changing the value back to 0 to disable this feature.
