So my girlfriend recently purchased a Lenovo G580 with Windows 8 pre-installed. When we turned on the laptop for the first time, it booted up and the wireless card wasn’t picking up any network connections at all even though I could connect on my Windows Phone. We moved the laptop right next to the router to see if it could find it and it did find it then.  Every time we moved away however, it would just disconnect. We thought that it could have been a driver issue so we took to the internet for a solution and guess what, we didn’t find one. However, we did see so many other people complaining about the same issue.

Here is your solution guys! If you’re having Lenovo G580 WiFi issues and your laptop comes with the Qualcomm Atheros WiFi card, it may be that the wires for the antenna aren’t connected properly. Every laptop I’ve ever had, the white cable has been the main cable and the black being the AUX. However, when we opened up the bottom of the laptop I noticed that they were the other way, and it also has them labelled to be the other way… So I just went ahead and switched those bad boys over and hurrah! The WiFi was picking up as it normally should with finding all connections in the area with full signal.

So for all people with a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG wireless card or even if it’s just your Lenovo G580 playing up, please take a look at the cables for the device by opening up the bottom of your case. The wireless card looks like the picture above and should have two cables attached. Don’t worry, they aren’t soldered. They just click in so it is very easy to swap them over. Now this probably isn’t the right fix and maybe the way Qualcomm have labelled their card is correct, but this solved the issue with my girlfriends wireless on her Lenovo G580 with a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG so please give it a good look and just swap them over. If it doesn’t work you can always swap them back.

    Hey James Croft, will this method work for Lenovo Y500 models which have the same wifi card model? I’ve been encountering problems about the wifi reception. Very weak compared to other laptops. While other laptops is quite further away from mine they still got 4 bars of wifi connection while mine which is a little nearer got only 3 bars. Do you think this antenna cable issue could be the problem? And if I open up the laptop will I void my warranty?

      It is possible that this could be the issue and you can always check by swapping them over. This won’t void your warranty as we eventually returned the Lenovo laptop as it just wasn’t great. There isn’t a seal or tab that can be broken when you remove the covers so I wouldn’t worry.

    Thanks for the tip. This worked like a charm and really saved my butt. I had tried everything else and was ready to give up. I was very hesitant to open the computer… but when i did, it couldn’t have been easier. The WIFI is strong now!!!

    Yep – cable swap worked for me! Thank you sooo much – saved the pain of getting a replacement which probably would have the same issue. I just can’t believe Lenovo haven’t posted something obvious somewhere – still, we are in an age where good customer service is a rarity!

    Thank you a lot! You saved me a week (I’m using my own SSHD in the Lenovo laptop, while using original HDD for other computer, would have to restore HDD to WIN8, freeze both computers for a week of service). I believe in people more thanks to your post!
    So it seems like a mistake during production time, swapped cable colors…

    Thank you so much, James! I’ve had my G580 for about a month and the wi-fi connection was perfect until last night, when it disappeared for seemingly no reason. I was able to connect today, just barely, by setting the laptop within inches of the wi-fi router and I found your post after exhausting all the possible fixes suggested on Lenovo’s thoroughly unhelpful message boards (mainly they suggest updating drivers that, on my computer, were already current). After reading your post I opened up the back and found that my white cable was loose and only making sporadic contact with its post. I reconnected it and have a full signal now. Should any problems return in the future I’ll switch the black and white as you recommend and see if that does the trick.

    Thanks for the post. I’m having this same issue. Problem is I only have one wire (black). I saw something like this on the net so I tried switching the black wire to the other “post”. Still same performance. Works when I’m sitting right next to the router but if I move a few feet away signal is lost. Any ideas? I don’t see a white wire anywhere.

    Update (a few hours after switching cables): Switching the cables on the Broadcom adapter resulted in worse performance. I reverted to black on the upper-left corner post and white on the upper-right corner post. Now I am relying on only Windows 7 drivers to solve the problem of periodic disconnects two or three days apart, as the laptop is nearly always on.

      Yeah this fix only seemed to work for people who couldn’t get any signal what so ever and needed to be right next to the router to actually connect. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you though. I’ve only tested this using the Atheros adapter.

    Hello, James. Thank you for this wonderful information. I have a G580 with the Broadcom adapter and have been experiencing disconnects every two or three days, though when connected I have been able to download large 1GB files. I read on the Lenovo site that a Lenovo tech recommended installing Windows 7 drivers for the Broadcom adapter
    (the Artheros adapter was not mentioned in this recommendation).

    However, I also came across your blog post and decided to have a look under the hood. The Broadcom adapter does not have the antennae posts labeled “main” and “aux”, or at least not that I could see. But I figured that all mini-pci wifi adapters should have the same orientation, with the top-left (near the screw, away from the mini-pci pins) post being “main” and the top-right being “aux”. I noticed that the white and black cables on the Broadcom adapter were not connected as you recommend and switched them. I will know in a few days if this fix alleviates the periodic disconnects.

    I would be very interested to hear about the other faults with this laptop that you have come across, so I can be prepared for the fixes in the future.

    Hi I had similar problem too! I unscrewed the back of my laptop and found out that there was only 1 wire (black wire attached to AUX) and no white wire to the main. So well..I guess I need to send my laptop for repairs.

      This might not be the case but if you don’t feel confident enough to do it then I wouldn’t try. Its possible that the white wire has fallen into the case of the laptop. If the laptop is in warranty however, I would send it back as it could void it.

    My friend’s G500s had the wifi drop issue and also wrongly labeled according to your information.
    I’ve just switched the black and white wires on the wifi card and it works like a charm again.

    Hey James,

    Thanks for the fix! I just switched the wires. The problem I have is that I can’t connect to my university WiFi(WPA2). It can connect to the the university’s campus WiFi (Unsecured), but I have limited connectivity, meaning no internet basically. I can connect just fine on my home network, anywhere around the house though. I’m not sure if it’ll fix the problem I have, but maybe it will. Haven’t had the chance to test it, since I commute to school, but I’m eager to go back to school and see if it is fixed! Either way, if it fixed my specific problem or not, I still fixed one of the many things wrong with the G580.

    Sorry to bother you, but your solution seems to have worked for other people but I am still having problems. I can connect to the internet fine but when streaming or downloading it stops every 20-100secs and “buffers”. It does this whether I am watching iPlayer or listening to radio/podcast. I cannot download anything large as it just gives up after a certain amount of time. I have Broadcom 802.11n and have even tried updating the driver. Nothing seems to work (for any more than 3 minutes anyway!)
    I know this is not your problem, but if you have any other suggestions I’ll be very grateful. Thanks.

    i have the lenovo g580 and almost the same problem. its when i switch on the laptop it takes couple of minutes for the wifi to work properly. only thing is that i have another the broadcom 802.11n card. so i was wondering if the solution you have provided would work.

    Hi guys. Also tried it switching the cables. Didnt wanna work the first and second time, but then I tried it again and it seemed to work. Now it picks up more available wifi networks! Thanks for the assistance.

      That’s no problem at all. If you have any other issues with your G580, don’t be scared to get in touch. I’ve found a ton of things wrong with them that I really think they should have looked into before distributing them out to the public

    Can someone help me?! I’m having the same issues. So I took the back off of my computer to see if the cords were plugged in as you say they should be…but I don’t even have a white cable going to the wifi card only the black!!!! What do I need to do?? Please help…

      If you are missing one of the cables plugged into the wireless card it may have fallen into the case of the laptop. You should probably take the laptop back to the store that you have bought it from and get a replacement rather than attempting to open the entire case.
