How To: Use the Project My Screen app to interact with your Windows Phone with a PC

By 19th April 2014 2 Comments

A great addition to the Windows Phone 8.1 update that the developers will love is ‘Project My Screen’, a feature that allows you to show of your Windows Phone for demonstrations or just to use on your PC if you wish. Here is how you can get this feature set up!

Due to limitations of current Windows Phone 8 hardware, you can’t project your Windows Phone screen to your PC over Wi-Fi which means that you will have to have your device plugged in. When it comes to showing off a demo though, it isn’t like you’re going to be moving far from your PC so I wouldn’t worry. With this new feature and tool for your PC though, you’ll be demoing your applications to others in no time like the guys at Microsoft during BUILD.

One of the best parts about this application for your PC is that it doesn’t just ‘project’ your screen. You can infact control your Windows Phone device using the PC application. A great way to scare your friends into thinking your phone is possessed! Jokes aside, while this may seem a pointless feature to some, it will be very useful for others.

Here are the steps you need to follow to get everything set up:

If you don’t get a prompt, head over to the settings and choose the Project My Screen option. If your phone is saying ‘Searching…’ here is a quick fix for you:

Device Manager

Uninstall the drivers from the open sections

  • Unplug your device from your computer
  • Open the Device Manager on your PC
  • Turn on ‘Show hidden devices’ from the View menu
  • Open the following sections IF they exist: Nokia USB, Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus devices.
  • Uninstall all of the drivers under these categories. The Nokia USB section may not exist, don’t worry. Just make sure to uninstall every driver from these sections
  • If you’re prompted to restart your PC, do so.
  • Now open the ‘Project My Screen app’ if you closed it and reconnect your device. You should now be able to enjoy screen projection from your Windows Phone device.

Happy developing!
